Shanghai Metro Line 18 Works to Begin This Year (2015)

Following recent approval from Shanghai’s planning authorities, it looks increasingly likely that work on a new north-south metro line for the city — that’s Metro Line 18 — will get underway within this year (2015).

The new Line 18 starts from South Changjiang Road (长江南路 / Changjiang South Road) and runs through Fudan University, Jiangpu Park, Minsheng Road, Middle Yanggao Road (Yanggao Middle Road) by Century Avenue, Longyang Road, and most of southern Shanghai. It will connect to Lines 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 16, and the Maglev.

This in essence makes Longyang Road a 4+1 interchange (4 metro lines plus the Maglev). All other interchanges on this line are expected to be with just another line, although given this is China, it’s quite likely a number might host extra lines in future!

Line 18 will incorporate a number of interchanges with existing lines, as follows:

  • Interchange with Line 2: Longyang Road (龙阳路)
  • Interchange with Line 3: South Changjiang Road (长江南路 / Changjiang South Road)
  • Interchange with Line 6: Minsheng Road (民生路)
  • Interchange with Line 7: Longyang Road (龙阳路)
  • Interchange with Line 8: Jiangpu Road (江浦路)
  • Interchange with Line 9: Middle Yanggao Road (杨高中路 / Yanggang Middle Road)
  • Interchange with Line 10: Guoquan Road (国权路)
  • Interchange with Line 11: Yuqiao (御桥)
  • Interchange with Line 12: Jiangpu Park (江浦公园)
  • Interchange with Line 13: Lianxi Road (莲溪路)
  • Interchange with Line 14: Changyi Road (昌邑路)
  • Interchange with Line 16: Longyang Road (龙阳路)
  • Transfer with Shanghai Maglev: Longyang Road (龙阳路)

The names at the interchange stations with Lines 13 and 14 have not yet been finalised and might change before opening.

The new line will be 36.8 km in length and use 6-car trains.
