Validity and Travel Remarks on Chinese Railway Tickets

The usual remark is often 限乘当日当次车, which simply translates into Valid for this train on date indicated only.

Here are some other remarks you might see. These have been ordered by the complexity of the first Chinese character first, then followed by the length of the text.

Ticket validated.
This refers to a completed journey and is not valid for station access or for travel.
Excess included.
An excess or penalty fare will be levied if you are found travelling without a valid ticket and do not intend to get one, even onboard.
Handling fee included.
This is most often seen if you are getting a ticket onboard a train, where a handling fee will almost alway be incurred.
To be used with original ticket.
You might encounter this if travelling on a transfer ticket (instead of a direct or through ticket), or if you get an upgrade enroute. Both tickets must be shown onboard if a ticket inspection gets underway.
Invalid if journey broken.
If you exit midway on your journey using this ticket, you are considered as having broken the journey and this ticket will automatically cease to valid. This is valid for all direct or through tickets even if it has not been indicated on your ticket, unless special conditions apply.
Seat reservation valid only on designated train.
This remark affirms that your seat reservation is only good on this very train. If you travel on another train (provided your ticket permits you to do so), you might need to stand or, with the permission of another traveller, use another seat.
  • 在 X 日内到有效 = Valid for arrival within X days.
The X is usually substituted for a number, such as anything between 2 and 6. Your date of departure is already counted in as Day 1. Increasingly, this condition of travel is only available on transfer tickets.
Valid for one journey on date indicated.
This ticket can actually be used once on any qualifying train between your departure and arrival stations based on this one remark alone.
To be used with group ticket.
If you are travelling in a group, which is made up of 20 or more passengers, your ticket will bear this. These tickets are only valid in conjunction with a qualifying group ticket.
Rebooked after departure, no refunds allowed.
This only applies to tickets that have been rebooked following departure — which can be done if travelling by CRH, but only exceptionally if travelling by regular rail.
Valid only for one journey on date indicated.
This ticket can actually be used once (but only once) on any qualifying train between your departure and arrival stations based on this one remark alone.
