Beijing’s new sub-centre in the eastern district of Tongzhou is getting an HSR hub, as the Beijing terminus of the new Beijing-Tangshan Intercity Railway. It’s not too far from the current-day Beijing-Harbin Railway, being only 50 metres away from it, but is a ways out east, in fact not all too far from city limits.
Fully understanding getting here would be a stretch, the new station is expected to be connected with three subway or suburban rail express lines. The name of these three lines remain rather mysterious: one of them is suburban rail and will as a connector to the larger Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei 1,000 km (625 mi) regional intercity rail network. The other two is an equally oddly-named Line S6, which could either end up as city metro or suburban rail, as well as a new northern link or connector line. Some subway enthusiasts have mused that this could be a Zhongguancun-Tongzhou link, but so far, detailed routing of this line remains hard to come by.
From the actual geographical location of the site, however, with it being sandwiched between Furong East Road and the Eastern 6th Ring Road, it might also be a stone’s throw away from Beiyunhe East station on Line 6, which at this moment is rather “aptly” lying around unused. It is not known, however, if future fast trains on Line 6 will be required to make a required stop here.
The new line will connect Beijing’s sub-centre in Tongzhou with Tangshan at speeds up to 350 km/h (217 mph), although the stretch from Beijing to Xianghe will be built only for speeds up to 220 km/h (137 mph). In addition to connecting up Central Tangshan, the city’s airport, Sannühe Airport, will also get a station, although it may get built only later. Other stations on the line include Yanjiao, Dachang, Baodi South (Baodi’nan), and Yahongqiao. The whole line will be built from December 2016 through to December 2020. Yanjiao station on the new line will be the same as the current-day station, and the Tangshan terminus will be at the same main city station as is presently the case.
The Beijing terminus of this new HSR line has been changed many times, from a possible new Beijing Tongzhou hub (aka a future new Beijing East Railway Station) to the present-day location. This will also be an underground city terminus.
