Here’s How Beijing’s Upgrading its Subway System
We just informed you a few days back about Shanghai’s plans to improve its city metro network. The city of Beijing isn’t falling too far behind…
Plans by Late 2015
- The remaining part of Line 14 will open, connecting the present-day two termini at Jintailu (Jintai Road) and Xiju, running through the Beijing South (Beijingnan) Railway Station.
- Minimum waiting times between trains will further be shortened as more train runs during peak hours. Lines 5, 6, 10, and 15, and the Daxing and Yizhuang Lines should see some visible improvements here (capacity increases between 5% and 15%).
- Platform screen doors on Line 13 and the Batong Line will enter service.
Plans by Late 2017
- Mileage throughout the Beijing Subway network will hit the 600 km mark (a little slower than according to previous plans).
- Line 13 will have a new station: Jiancaicheng, in northern suburban Beijing.
- The Line 13 part of Qinghuadonglu Xikou (Qinghua East Road West) station will enter operation. It will then be possible to change between the two lines at this station.
- Line 16 will open (this line will run from Zhongguancun via Muxidi and the Beijing Fengtai Railway Station to near the Marco Polo Bridge).
- Platform screen doors will enter service on the city’s remaining two lines — Lines 1 and 2.
- New interchange passageways should enter service, facilitating transfers at Xuanwumen, Guomao, and Shaoyaoju stations.
- There will also be capacity increases for Lines 7, 8, 13, and 14, as well as for the Changping and Fangshan Lines.
- Toilets on Lines 1, 2, 13 and the Batong Line will see a long-awaited improvement.
- Signage for disabled passengers will be more visible on Line 13 and the Batong Line. There should also be more seats in stations for passengers.
Remember: Beijing’s goal is 1,000 km by 2020. This must mean a mass explosion of new lines to happen between 2018 and when the goal is set!
